Description of Urea

Urea, also known as carbamide, is an organic compound composed of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen. One of the simplest organic compounds, it is the main nitrogenous end product of protein metabolic breakdown in mammals and certain fish. It is also the highest nitrogen fertilizer at present.

As a neutral fertilizer, urea is suitable for a variety of soils and plants. It is easy to preserve, easy to use, and has little damage to soil. It is a kind of chemical nitrogen fertilizer used in large quantities at present. In industry, ammonia and carbon dioxide are used to synthesize urea under certain conditions.

Application and Dosage of Urea

Medical Applications:

Dermatology uses certain agents containing urea to increase the moisture of the skin. The closed dressing used for non-surgically removed nails contains 40% urea.

The carbon-14-breath test, which tests for the presence of Helicobacter pylori, uses urea that contains a carbon 14 or carbon 13 label. Because H. pylori’s urease uses urea to make ammonia to raise the pH in its surrounding stomach. The same principle can be tested for similar bacteria that live in animals’ stomachs.

Agricultural Applications:

Urea is a kind of high concentration nitrogen fertilizer, a neutral fast fertilizer, and can also be used to produce a variety of compound fertilizers. No harmful substances remain in the soil, and long-term application has no adverse effects. Animal husbandry can be used as feed for ruminants. However, too high temperature in granulation will produce a small amount of biuret, also known as biuret, which has an inhibitory effect on crops. China stipulates that the content of urea biuret for fertilizer should be less than 0.5%. When the biuret content exceeds 1%, seed fertilizer, seedling fertilizer and leaf fertilizer cannot be made, and the urea content in other application periods should not be too much or too concentrated.

Urea is an organic nitrogen fertilizer, which is hydrolyzed into ammonium carbonate or ammonium bicarbonate by the action of urease in the soil before it can be absorbed and utilized by crops. Therefore, urea should be applied 4 to 8 days before the crop needs fertilizer.

Commercial Applications:

Raw materials for special plastics, especially urea formaldehyde resins

The raw material of certain kinds of gum

Fertilizer and feed ingredients

Instead of anti-freezing salt sprinkled on the street, the advantage is that the metal does not corrode

Enhance the smell of cigarettes

Gives industrially produced pretzels a brown color

Ingredients in certain shampoos and cleansers

Ingredients for first-aid refrigeration kits, because urea reacts with water to absorb heat

Treatment of exhaust gases from diesel engines, engines and thermal power plants, especially to reduce nitrogen oxide

Composition of rain enhancer

It was used to separate paraffin because urea forms clathrates

Ingredients for environmentally friendly engine fuels

Ingredients for teeth whitening products

Chemical fertilizer

An important aid for dyeing and printing

Laboratory Application:

Urea is very effective in denaturating proteins, especially in breaking non-covalently bound proteins. This feature can increase the solubility of certain proteins at concentrations up to 10 mol/volume. Urea can also be used to make urea nitrate.

Feed additives:

The shortage of human food resources and protein has also caused a major problem for the feed industry. The industry is actively looking for new sources of protein and expanding beyond protein sources of nitrogen, such as urea, which is high in nitrogen.
