The role of Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer in Grouting Mortars

Polycarboxylate superplasticiser (PCE) is an important component of plugging slurries. It is an additive that allows to significantly reduce water content in plugging slurries. The content of polycarboxylate superplasticiser can change the flowability and improve workability. By reducing the water to cement ratio, the strength and durability of plugging mortars and other properties are improved.

The functions of adding polycarboxylate superplasticiser in plugging mortars are as follows:

1.Dispersion effect:

After mixing cement with water, the cement slurry forms a flocculation structure due to the molecular weight of cement particles, so that 10% to 30% of the mixing water is wrapped by cement particles and cannot participate in free flow and lubrication, thus affecting the flowability of the concrete mixture. When the polycarboxylate superplasticiser is added, molecules of the polycarboxylate superplasticiser may adsorb on the surface of the cement particles in a directional manner, forming an electrostatic repulsion, causing the cement particles to disperse with each other, breaking the flocculation structure and releasing the wrapped portions, thereby increasing the flowability. concrete admixture.

2.Lubricating effect:

Polycarboxylate superplasticiser, which has high hydrophilicity, can form a stable solvate aqueous film with water molecules on the surface of cement particles. This aqueous film has a good lubricating effect and can effectively reduce the slip resistance between particles and improve the flowability of concrete.

3.Sustained release effect:

In the preparation process of polycarboxylate superplasticiser, some branched chains are grafted to the molecules. This branched chain not only provides a steric hindrance effect, but also acts as a barrier in the highly alkaline hydration environment of cement. The branched chains can be slowly trimmed, releasing polycarboxylic acids with dispersing effect, which can improve the dispersing effect of cement particles and control the loss of sludge.

4.Steric hindrances:

The hydrophilic polyester side chains in the superplasticiser structure extend in aqueous solution to form a hydrophilic three-dimensional adsorption layer of a certain thickness on the surface. As the cement particles come closer together, the adsorption layers begin to overlap and steric hindrance occurs between the cement particles. The greater the overlap, the greater the steric repulsion and the greater the obstacle to adhesion between cement particles, resulting in good concrete settlement.
