  • Paraffin waxes can be classified in a number of ways. The main classification methods are melting point classification, oil content classification, application classification and color classification.
  • The melting point classification is based on the melting point of paraffin wax. Paraffin waxes whose melting point is lower than 45°C are called soft waxes. The melting point is between 45 and 60 °C. Hard wax is divided into fully refined wax, semi-refined wax, and crude paraffin wax.
  • According to the refining degree of paraffin wax, paraffin wax can be divided into crude paraffin wax, semi-refined wax, fully refined wax and food wax. The deeper the degree of refinement, the lighter its color, and the better the product quality, but the higher the production cost.
  • According to the appearance of paraffin wax, paraffin wax can be divided into liquid wax and solid wax.
  • According to the level of oil content of paraffin wax, fully refined paraffin wax is divided into superior grade and first grade. Generally speaking, paraffin wax with oil content greater than 6% is called oil wax.
  • According to the difference in the crystal structure of paraffin wax, paraffin wax can be divided into macrocrystalline paraffin wax and microcrystalline wax. Microcrystalline wax is mostly used as an additive in handmade scented candles.

    The difference and use of each melting point of paraffin wax:
    High Melting Point: This wax is ideal for cylindrical candles, hand-dipped fine candles, molded candles, shaped or engraved gift candles. This wax is very hard and does not retain its fragrance and has a melting point of 63°C. This type of wax is needed to make the above types of wax so that the candle doesn’t sag on its own as it cools. If you make candles with this wax, you need to use additives.
  • Medium melting point: This wax is commonly used to make prayer candles and sometimes container candles, and has a melting point of 53-63°C. This wax is harder to the touch than a low melting point wax, but retains its shape better. This wax is better in terms of fragrance retention, but requires the use of additives. This type of wax is blocky and needs to be cut into small pieces to melt.
    Low melting point: This type of wax melts at a temperature of 53 °C. Soft wax is an ideal material for making container candles, and has the characteristics of lasting fragrance until the candle is burned out. Soft wax has strong flexibility. No additives are required. Softer paraffin waxes have many advantages, however, they are more difficult to process and emit more fumes than other waxes.
