Paraffin Wax

What is paraffin? Paraffin is the general name for a mixture of solid higher alkanes. How to write the chemical formula of paraffin What is the use of paraffin? Let’s take a look at what is made of paraffin wax.

The chemical formula of paraffin: CnH2n+2, where n=20-40.

What is paraffin wax made of: Paraffin wax is a white waxy solid with a slight odor. It can be prepared by cold pressing or dewaxing with a solvent. Perspiration and other methods come from wax fractions of natural or man-made petroleum

Paraffin wax is a solid crystalline product extracted from petroleum. It is a variety of hydrocarbons, that is, a mixture of hydrocarbons of different molecular weights. Mainly contains ordinary paraffin wax. And solid isoparaffins, cycloalkanes and a small amount of aromatics. Commercially available paraffin waxes usually have a carbon number between 22 and 36, a molecular weight between 360 and 540, and a boiling point between 300 and 550°C. The normal paraffins in the composition decrease, while the solid isoparaffins and cycloalkanes increase. Different crude oils have different chemical compositions of paraffin wax.

Yellow paraffin or poorly refined wax still contains non-hydrocarbon components. Although these complex organic compounds of sulfur, nitrogen and oxygen are in trace amounts, the stability of paraffin wax is greatly reduced. Some molten cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the small amount of aromatic hydrocarbons contained in paraffin wax are harmful to the human body. The aromatics in the molten ring must fall below the specified index before it can be used.

Some paraffin wax was analyzed with a mass spectrometer in the laboratory. The chemical composition data of each fraction divided by the number of carbon atoms in the molecule indicates that the fraction with the least number of carbon atoms in the molecule is n-alkane. And an increase in the number of carbon atoms increases the content of isoparaffins and cycloalkanes. The aromatic hydrocarbons in waxes only appear in high-carbon fractions. Therefore, under the same distillation conditions, the content of cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons melted in inferior waxes of common commercial paraffins is lower than that of high-quality waxes.

Paraffin wax is a mixture of hydrocarbons. Therefore, it does not have a strict melting point like pure compounds. Melting point, also known as paraffin, refers to the temperature at which a stagnation period appears on the cooling curve for the first time when a molten paraffin sample is cooled under specified conditions. All waxing products require paraffin wax to obtain good temperature resistance, that is, it will not melt, soften and warp at a given temperature. Commercial paraffins require multiple melting points. According to the conditions of use

The main factor affecting the melting point of paraffin wax is the weight of the selected waste. The heavier paraffin wax has a higher melting point. In addition, the oil content also has a significant effect on the melting point of the paraffin wax: the higher the oil content of the paraffin wax, the higher the melting point. The lower the melting point of paraffin.
