What is denatured alcohol?

Denatured alcohol refers to ethanol (ETHYL ALCOHOL) added with various ingredients to make it unsuitable for drinking according to the standards prescribed by the government. There are several brands of the best denatured alcohol for general use such as cleaning and dilution, and they are sold in cans. A typical formula that is widely used is S.D. No. 1, which consists of five gallons of methanol, five gallons of ethyl acetate, and one gallon of gasoline per hundred gallons of alcohol. Anhydrous denatured alcohol can be purchased at special dealers. The reason for using denatured alcohol is that it can be exempted from the heavy tax imposed on general alcohol.

Classification of denatured ethanol

The denaturation of alcohol refers to the process of adding some denaturant substances to the alcohol to change the properties of alcohol so that it cannot be used in the state of beverage use, to prevent the alcohol used in cosmetics from being illegally transferred to alcoholic beverages. This is called “denaturation.” . This means that it contains a “denatured” additive that prevents it from being consumed. For the regulatory conditions for transgender operation and manufacturing, see the supervision of the US Treasury Department of Tobacco, Alcohol and Firearms Administration (ATF), some substances can be added to make denatured alcohol.

There are two types of denatured alcohol:

1. Special Denatured Alcohol (SDA)

2. Completely denatured alcohol (CDA)

Special denatured alcohol

The amount and characteristics of specific denaturants are selected very carefully, so as not to interfere with the rational use of each permitted formulation for specific products. All business processing of SDA is strictly managed. For example, adding benzene after dehydrating alcohol in the distillation process can produce a very pure and effective fuel source-denatured alcohol

Completely denatured alcohol

After the ethanol has been completely denatured, the product cannot be used in beverages at all. The denaturant used is almost inseparable from ethanol. Without unauthorized permission, completely denatured alcohol can be used because pure alcohol cannot be extracted and transferred to beverages.

Denatured alcohol loses its intoxicating effect because chemicals are added to ethanol. Therefore, cosmetics and personal care products containing denatured alcohol are allowed, of course, assuming that all other ingredients in the product are also halal.
